The chart below provides a high-level overview of current and enacted leave laws in each state, including which employers are covered and whether the leave must be paid.

The complicated web of state-enacted leave laws can be overwhelming. Many states require multiple types of leave, and some states have more than one leave law that applies to an employee’s situation. Employers must understand, for example, how related leave laws like paid sick leave, family and medical leave, leave for victims of domestic or sexual violence, and leave to care for a sick family member, apply in their jurisdictions and how they interact with each other.
Once employers know which laws apply, they must also carefully review the details and track any upcoming changes. Leave laws differ in applicability, total hours of leave required, whether leave is paid or unpaid and more. Every step of the leaves administration process opens the door to risk. It is no wonder that many employers striving to fulfill their compliance obligations struggle to stay up to date.
The chart below provides a high-level overview of leave laws by state, including covered employers and whether the leave must be paid. Note, for purposes of this chart, paid leave is considered leave for which employers must compensate employees.
